Master trainer Wiegert: “My ego is not exactly small”

Master trainer Bennet Wiegert sees himself confirmed in his long-term work. The coach of the handball Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg had to endure other experiences during his seven-year tenure.

According to his own statement, however, he hardly had any self-doubt. “Rather less. My ego is not exactly small. But there were times when we were laughed at as dwarf handball. When it didn’t work and we sat together in the presidium and talked about resigning from the management,” said Wiegert in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” and added: “But that would have been too easy for me. I wanted to show everyone that what I had thought up works. That my concept of continuity works.”

So he planned his championship squad over many years like a jigsaw puzzle. “You have to say that we’ve never had a royal transfer where we went beyond our economic limits. We can’t afford that,” said the 40-year-old. So he signed Omar Ingi Magnusson “when he had his severe concussion and no one dared to do it anymore. That’s our niche”. It was the same with Gisli Kristjansson when he was brought in by the record champions THW Kiel.
