Master and horse hunk Thom shines in spicy calendar: “I don’t really have anything with horses”

He has never ridden a horse in his life. Yet 23-year-old Thom Koreman from De Rijp Mister October is in the new Horse and Hunk calendar. In the calendar there are beautiful men and beautiful horses. And Thom, who also teaches at Oeboentoe primary school in Purmerend, is one of those horse hunks: “My colleagues don’t even know yet, but I’m not ashamed of it.”

Thom Koreman from De Rijp stands on a kitchen step somewhat awkwardly, holding the halter of Fenix, a beautiful cream-colored mare at a riding school in Gelderland. Meanwhile, the photographer is printing at a rapid pace. Just a pat on the head and the ice seems broken. “It was a bit of a test at first,” says Thom. “The animal was quite shy, so that was quite difficult, but after a while we had a click and the photo was on it in an hour.”

Thom actually rolled into the modeling world by accident. A friend of his had a business in nutritional supplements and was looking for a beautiful face and body to go with it. Thom had his picture taken in the gym. A photographer saw the photos and approached him to create a portfolio. It eventually resulted in photo shoots for a watch brand, sportswear and now for a nude calendar. “But if I have to choose between education and the modeling world, I will go for education, that’s where my passion lies.”

Underpants

Well naked? Only the muscular torsos of the twelve horse hunks can be admired in the calendar. “You really won’t see me in a photo without underwear,” Koreman says resolutely. “I mainly did this because it seemed like a challenge to do a shoot with animals. You really step out of your comfort zone and you learn a lot from that. It’s also great that it’s for a good cause.”

Because just like the eleven other handsome men, Thom is selflessly committed to charity: Brooke Hospital for Animals. This foundation is committed to providing free medical aid to horses and donkeys in countries such as Egypt and Pakistan. That help is desperately needed, according to Fianne Imminga of the Horse and Hunk calendar. “If, for example, the animal cannot work due to a wound, then the family has no income either.”

The Horse and Hunk calendar is already being published for the 14th time this year. “It actually started as a joke,” says horse lover Fianne Imminga, who came up with the idea for the calendar during the last year of the Equestrian Business Administration course in Dronten. “Of course there are already enough calendars with beautiful women hanging in car garages. We wanted to make a counterpart. A calendar for horse girls that hangs at all riding schools.”

“It is mainly ladies in their sixties who supposedly buy the calendar as a gift”

Imminga is always trying to find hunks who can ride horses too. After fourteen editions, that becomes increasingly difficult. In this year’s edition there are only four men who can actually mount a horse. “It is still a women’s sport and the men who have both horseback riding and a six-pack are scarce. So we are still looking for models who can ride a horse, so horse hunks in North Holland report especially you.” Thom has never ridden a horse before. “I don’t really have anything with horses,” he says.

Grandma

What started as a joke has now become huge. In addition to calendars, postcards and canvases are also printed. The calendar sells well every year and not just to horse girls and horse boys. “We are sometimes at a fair and then it is noticeable that especially ladies in their sixties who supposedly buy it as a gift. I suspect that they just hang it at home themselves.”

Thom can also be admired in the toilets of many student houses. “I’m not a vain at all, but that’s quite fun of course. I also hang out in a farm of friends, I can laugh about that.” Thom’s 79-year-old grandmother also has the calendar at home. “It hangs in the kitchen and even though it’s the middle of summer, the calendar stays on October.”
