Four people were injured in a suspected street race in Helmond. Two cars would have driven away at the same time at a traffic light on Europaweg. One of the two cars crashed into the back of a stationary taxi bus at the next traffic light, after which the car caught fire. The devastation on the street was enormous.
The other car was able to avoid the taxi bus and took off. The car, which hit the taxi bus at high speed, slid under the bus, pushing the bus some distance forward.
Victims on the street
When the emergency services arrived, chaos reigned. The injured were lying on the street near the car, but also on the parallel road and in a side street.
Police suspect that victims may have tried to get away from the scene of the accident, as they were probably racing. Research has yet to prove that.
There were also many people on the street who saw the accident happen. The four victims have been taken to hospital.
Underage victims
Most of the car’s occupants were minors. Someone was also knocked to the ground and taken away. It is not clear why he was arrested.
CCTV footage would show that the cars were involved in a street race. The main road through Helmond in the direction of the center will remain closed for the time being. The police are investigating forensic evidence.
