He killed 77 people – and insists on his human rights.
The Norwegian right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik (44) is suing the state for alleged violations of his human rights. At the same time, he submits another application for parole.
The mass murderer says prison conditions have deteriorated after 11 years in solitary confinement. “He is suing the state because he has been in extreme isolation for 11 years and has no contact with anyone other than his guards,” Breivik’s lawyer Oeystein Storrvik told Reuters.
Breivik is serving Norway’s longest sentence at 21, which can be extended if he continues to be seen as a threat.
Breivik was transferred to Ringerike prison last year after serving eight years in Telemark prison in Skien.
In 2016, Breivik had also sued Norway for human rights violations. In 2017, the Borgarting Court of Appeal ruled that the prison conditions he was subjected to at the time did not violate human rights.
Ringerike prison chief Eirik Bergstedt says he has no comment on Breivik’s allegations. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security has also not commented on the lawsuit.
On July 22, 2011, Breivik wiped out 77 lives in the Norwegian capital Oslo and on the island of Utøya. Most of the victims were children and young people.
