800 of the 11,500 jobs at Tata Steel in IJmuiden will be lost. The steel group announced this today in a press release. The company also says that it cannot rule out forced layoffs.
According to Tata Steel, the steel market has been struggling for some time and in order to remain competitive and profitable in the future, the steel producer wants to further reduce personnel costs.
According to the group, approximately 500 permanent jobs will be lost, mainly in management and support functions. In addition, the place for about 300 temporary workers will disappear. This also includes vacancies that will not be filled.
Forced dismissal
It is not yet clear whether this will involve forced layoffs. The steel group itself has already indicated that this cannot be ruled out, but that a social plan will be discussed with the unions.
In a previous round of redundancies of a similar format, in 2020, there were ultimately no forced redundancies. Sufficient space could be provided through a buyout scheme and natural turnover.
A total of 11,500 people work for Tata Steel in the Netherlands. The factory in IJmuiden employs 9,200 people.
