Mass blackout: “The density of the smoke caused the disconnection”

“The high-voltage networks go to that area and bring wholesale electricity. They are the highways of the country. When they perceive a threat, which is fire and smoke, they disconnect. That abrupt disconnection takes out the generators and the other transmission lines. The density of smoke causes the automatic disconnection system to activate,” he explained. Santiago Yanotti, Undersecretary of Electric Power, about the fire at Campana and General Rodriguez.

The official responsible for the portfolio, in an interview with the media, clarified: “When the lines are under tension, they begin to present automatic disconnections in order to preserve the facilities and achieve 40 percent isolation. Except for Tierra del Fuego, all the Argentine provinces are linked and physically interconnected with cables. Power is generated throughout the country and everything is interconnected and managed by CAMESA”.

Although the electrical service was restored in a large part of the country, which yesterday affected 6 million homes (some 20 million people), this Thursday morning more than 40,000 users in the city and province of Buenos Aires continued without supply. In parallel, in the AMBA area there is an orange alert due to the heat wave.

In the City of Buenos Aires power returned in different neighborhoods, even though some are still affected, such as Chacarita, Villa Urquiza, Colegiales, Villa Lugano, Parque Patricios, Mataderos, Palermo and Caballito, among others. Something similar happened in different areas of the suburbs: Vicente López, Tigre, Morón, Olivos, San Justo, Bernal, Quilmes, Don Bosco, Avellaneda, Gerli, Merlo, San Antonio de Padua, Ituzaingó and Gran La Plata.

The sectors that are still affected are: Tigre, San Fernando, Escobar, Tres de Febrero, Pilar, Morón, La Matanza, San Miguel, San Martín, Moreno, San Isidro, Vicente López, General Rodríguez and Malvinas Argentina. In the southern area of the AMBA, some towns belonging to Buenos Aires parties such as Almirante Brown, Avellaneda, Berazategui, Esteban Echeverría, Florencio Varela, Lanús, Lomas de Zamora, Quilmes and San Vicente, are under repair.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy of the Nation and the Federal Police filed complaints before the Federal Justice in which they request that the origin of the massive blackout be investigated. The complaints were filed in the federal court of Campana, in charge ofand Adrian González Charvay, who has jurisdiction in the Atucha I area, located in the Buenos Aires town of Lima. Through this complaint, Minister Sergio Massa, head of the economic portfolio, asks “to arrest those responsible for the very serious events that occurred that day.”
