Canada’s captain Mason McTavish made history in the U20 World Cup group game against Slovakia.
McTavish scored four goals in Slovakia’s net and also had two assists as Canada crushed Slovakia by a score of 11-1.
– It was pretty incredible. It doesn’t matter who you do it against or what the situation is, it’s always special to score four goals and six points, Canadian defender Donovan Sebrango said after the match of the Toronto Sun by.
With his four goals, McTavish shares the record for goals scored in one game by Canadian players at the World Youth Championships.
Previously, four goals in one match at the World Youth Championship have been scored by Mario Lemieux (1984), Brayden Schenn (2011) and Maxime Comtois (2019).
– It’s pretty great, a special moment. Thanks to my teammates who passed to me throughout the match. Connor (Bedard) scored four goals in December, so he knew it was a record. They tried to get me the fifth goal, McTavish said.
As many as nine players from the Canadian team scored two points or more.
McTavish didn’t really air his hits. It might have surprised the sparse audience.
– I’m not the biggest fan of goals, unless it’s the winning goal in the seventh game. I don’t get too excited, I just don’t like to party too much, but it was a special night, McTavish replied.
In the early days of the World Cup, the lack of spectators has been surprising. Only 300 spectators had come to watch the match between Sweden and Switzerland at Rogers Place, which can accommodate more than 18,000 people.
According to the IIHF, 3,216 Canadian hockey fans had shown up for the Slovakia match.
NHL player
McTavish had to ask NHL club Anaheim Ducks for permission to join Canada’s World Cup team.
Now we only go to August, which is usually the summer training months for players. Some of the NHL promises have not agreed to come to the games.
McTavish was booked by the Ducks for the entire 2011 draft as the third player.
– He is our captain, he is an NHL player, so I don’t think anyone is surprised by what he brings to the ice. I have been convinced by his attitude. He has no ego. He certainly had every possible reason not to come to this tournament considering the timing, Canada’s head coach Dave Cameron comment.
– It tells about his character. He is preparing for the NHL, he didn’t have to come here, but he decided to anyway, Sebrango stumbled.
Slovak Adam Sykora was puzzled by the outcome.
– I do not know what happened. It was a terrible game for everyone. We have a lot of skill, but we need to play more as a team. We didn’t do that today. Everyone wanted to play their own game. We can’t do that, Sykora said on the IIHF website.
