According to South African police, the mass shooting happened just after midnight on Saturday night. Twelve people died on the spot, three others later succumbed to their injuries. Eight people are still in hospital.

“People were having fun when they suddenly heard gunshots,” Police Commissioner Elias Mawela told The South African newspaper. “They saw victims drop dead and were themselves injured or pretended to be dead.”

Witnesses reported that masked men burst into the cafe and opened fire. The assailants fired “cold blood” and indiscriminately at the guests present, a police spokesman told the BBC. The perpetrators reportedly fled afterwards in a white Toyota van. The police have opened an investigation. No arrests have been made yet. A motive for the massacre is not yet known.

There was also a shooting at a bar in the eastern city of Pietermaritzburg in South Africa on Saturday night. Four people were killed and eight injured.
