Greek olives, fresh baba ganoush, honey, olive oil and more: Marya’s Crete deli (28) has it all. Marya herself loves honest, pure and tasty products. Her shop is full of that. “You won’t find this in the supermarket.”
Marya took over the store five years ago Crete Delicatessen about. At that time it was mainly a Greek olive shop with products such as oil and eggplant salad. Over the years, Marya has further expanded her range. Now she makes fresh sauces, has all kinds of olives and sells nuts, baklava, honey, oil and other Greek products.
Fresh and homemade
Marya makes as many products as possible herself. This applies to the olives, sauces and much more in the store. “For example, our baba ganoush is very popular,” she says. “The previous owner already made that and I have expanded the recipe to my own taste. People often come to the store especially for that.”
Lots of variety
After the takeover, Marya also worked in healthcare. This opportunity just came her way and she grabbed it with both hands. “I like variety,” she explains. “At the time I was training to become a medical assistant. In addition to my entrepreneurship, I completed my education. Doing two completely different things kept the work interesting for me.” She now works full-time in the store, because it is nice and busy. “Now my sister also works here. So it has actually become a family business!”
Providing people with a beautiful evening
What Marya enjoys most about her work is giving people a pleasant drink or evening with her snacks. Or that customers find a suitable gift in her store. “There is nothing I like more than when an enthusiastic customer returns for my snacks that were so popular. Or that someone has been referred to my business by a customer. That’s why I do it.”
The purest olive oil
Marya herself is most fond of her olive oil. “You usually won’t find the best olive oil in the supermarket. As far as I’m concerned, it comes from Greece,” she explains. “The products there are fresh, honest and organic. There is also so much more flavor and it is hardly processed. This also applies to honey: it is so much tastier and purer from Greece.”
The best location
Crete Delicatessen can be found opposite the exit of Albert Heijn XL in the Westwardpassage. Marya thinks this place is perfect. “If people can’t find something in the supermarket, they walk straight to Crete,” she explains. “Or if they want to supplement their daily groceries with a tasty snack for the weekend. It’s a nice spot with a lot of foot traffic. We couldn’t wish for better.”
