Berlin (AP) – Defender Marvin Friedrich changes from Union Berlin to Borussia Mönchengladbach with immediate effect. The 26-year-old will receive a contract with Borussia until the summer of 2026, both clubs announced.
Friedrich, whom Gladbach’s sports director Max Eberl described as “one of the best German defenders in the league”, is scheduled to train on Wednesday on the Lower Rhine and could play against Bayer Leverkusen on January 15th (6.30pm). Friedrich had already been absent from the Köpenicker training session and completed the medical check at Borussia.
In Mönchengladbach, the U19 European champion from 2014 is apparently supposed to replace national player Matthias Ginter, who is leaving Borussia in the summer at the latest. Ginter had announced that he would leave Gladbach in the summer after five years without a transfer. Friedrich’s contract in Berlin also ran until the summer. Other clubs are also said to have been interested in the 1.92 meter tall player. How much the Borussia pay for Friedrich in transfer is unclear.
