Marvel actor dies while filming in Italy

Ray Stevenson is dead. His publicist Nicki Fioravante and his US-based PR firm Viewpoint confirmed this to the BBC and The Hollywood Reporter. Further details on the cause of death are not yet known.

It is certain that the Northern Irish actor died at the age of 58 in Italy while shooting a film. According to a report by the Italian “Repubblica”, Stevenson had to be hospitalized on the island of Ischia on Saturday. There the actor stood in front of the camera for his film “Cassino auf Ischia” directed by Frank Ciota. His death was announced four days before his 59th birthday.

Stevenson is best known for his role as “Volstagg”, Thor’s best friend in the Marvel Universe. He was also seen in a German production: In 2022 Stevenson played the naval officer Jack Swinburne in the third season of the series “Das Boot”. He also played the lead character Frank Castle in the Marvel film Punisher: War Zone. He also played in the series “Vikings”, “Dexter” and in the Star Wars series “Ahsoka”.

He also had other notable credits in 2004’s King Arthur and 2011’s The Three Musketeers. Stevenson also played Blackbeard in the Michael Bay-produced 2016 series Black Sails (2016-2017).
