Disapprove

In social media, a heated discussion immediately started about headgear, which was considered a cultural property. Cultural appropriation means when a person belonging to the dominant population adopts elements from cultures oppressed by the dominant culture.

At least there was a discussion on the topic in the chat app Jodel and Reddit.

– I thought that lessons had been learned from the Miss Helsinki scandal, but no.

– I thought that there is quite a large group of them there. Didn’t it occur to anyone to say that maybe you could have a party without these?

– I was here in my own corner and imagined that these kinds of things were left for somewhere in 2009.

– I can not understand. How dumb someone must have been to still not understand not to do that. Actually, even my 90-year-old grandmother knows.

It is not the first time that Aitolehti has received criticism for feather headdresses. In 2017, the Miss Helsinki competition piloted by Aitolehti caused a stir when the miss candidates were photographed wearing feather headdresses.
