It’s been 20 years since Martin Scorsese’s revenge drama about 19th-century New York gangsters caused a sensation. Now “Gangs Of New York” is to become a television series. Like the industry portal “Deadline.com” reported, production company Miramax is working on the project. Scorsese himself will serve as executive producer and direct the first two episodes.

Scorsese’s 2002 film was based on Herbert Ashbury’s book of the same name — not a novel, but non-fiction about the New York underworld. But the book also features dazzling characters like “Bill the Butcher”, which Scorsese brought to life in his film. The main roles were played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz. The series is also said to be based on Ashbury’s book, but the focus should be on other characters.

In addition to film icons such as “Taxi Driver” (1976), Scorsese is best known for gangster dramas, including the mafia films “Goodfellas” (1990) and “Casino” (1995). He also made a foray into television for the series Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014), which revolves around Prohibition-era America in the 1920s. Again, Scorsese was a producer and shot the pilot episode.
