Martijje and Leon Moorman tour 62 Bucket schools: ‘Increase love for handmade music’

Nearly 8,700 students from 62 schools visit in five days to make music together. In June, singer Martijje Lubbers and singer Leon Moorman undertake this lightning tour throughout the municipality of Emmen. Making music yourself is good for development, says project leader Peter Deiman. In addition, he hopes to stimulate the love for traditionally made music among young people.

Deiman is no stranger to music land. As a drummer and percussionist he has performed with Dilana Smith, the Time Bandits, Dolf Jansen, Margaretha Kleine and toured with Motel Westcoast. He also gives lessons and workshops.

Recently, a new role has been added: that of local project leader of the national initiative Meer Muziek In De Klas.

Sing & jump

In June, Martijje and Moorman will close almost all primary schools in the municipality of Emmen in five days. “They both immediately reacted enthusiastically to the initiative. They will soon jump out of a van at every schoolyard for a half-hour program. The highlight is the singing of the song Zing & Spring (written by children’s book writer Jeroen Schipper).”

The schools will receive detailed instructions from 9 May in the form of a video clip with the two singers.

“The different groups all receive a separate assignment while singing. Groups 1 and 2 sing in a separate line. The oldest students do a piece of body percussion during the performance,” explains Deiman.

The musician and teacher has been asked by the Art Movement in Emmen to lead the way there. Deiman accepts that task with both hands. “Scientific studies show that music is very important for the development of children.” Making or listening to it has a beneficial effect on the child’s brain, he says.
