The chair legs of Martien Meiland are being sawn. His former bosom friend Caroline van Eeden wants him burned at the stake and that is why she is publishing a book in collaboration with writer Valérie Lempereur, the former manager of the Meilandjes. Wilfred Genee has already lifted a corner of the veil in his TV hit Today Inside.

In a pinch

Wilfred has read a passage from Caroline’s book in which she reveals that Martien would do parking*ks. Colleague Patty Brard has no problem with that at all, but the reality star herself didn’t seem very happy about it: he didn’t even appear in front of the Shownieuws camera on his birthday, which brought flowers.

After three days of radio silence, Martien finally responds to Wilfred’s action. He says RTL Boulevard: “We were completely blown away. Yes, really! If that the highlight is from the book, then I don’t think it’s ehhh… Just like Mrs Van Eeden’s TV career, that didn’t go well, of course.”

‘That’s right’

But is that true about those parking spaces? “Of course! Yes.”

However, it was a long time ago, says Martien. “Of course. Naturally. I was 40 when I came out and wanted to explore all that.

Is he ashamed of it? “No, not at all.”

What does he think about Caroline having PTSD because of all the Meiland books? “She had a fight with Maxime and it just happened. That’s also just the truth. Other than that I thought: it’s actually not too bad. And then you can get so sick of it? Very strange!”

‘He is honest’

Bridget Maasland thinks Martien is brave. “I also can’t imagine that someone who describes his entire life in books and shows it on television, that you could sit with this.”

Reporter Aran Bade: “No, that doesn’t bother him. And he’s honest, isn’t he? Because he just admits it. I think that’s cool of him too. What he did then, twenty years ago – I already thought: he is now also a celebrity, you can’t do that now – he should know that for himself.”

Luuk Ikink: “A cooing man from the bush. Crazy, yes.”

Aran: “Yes, it is of course a bit strange, but yes: he is honest and just says it. He is an open book.”

Shrug

Evert Santegoeds says in the podcast Strictly Private that he does not expect any image damage for Martien. “I don’t know if the stories really stick to Martien. Martien has always said that he has been away from his family for a while, which is also stated in his first book that he has tried everything. In the end he went back and all’s well that ends well.”

He continues: “Whatever ghosts of the past still pop up… I don’t think he’s in parking lots anymore. Not that I personally check that, but I think these are stories from years ago and in the Netherlands we generally shrug our shoulders a bit about that.”
