Martien Meiland criticizes SBS 6 audience: ‘Flemish viewers are not sour’

Martien Meiland sometimes finds the Dutch very irritating and unnecessarily critical, he said in conversation with the Weekend. “Very sour in their reactions, unlike Belgian viewers.”

It is common knowledge that most famous Dutch people cannot handle criticism. Some can do that, think of Johnny de Mol and Chantal Janzen, but stars like Linda de Mol and Samantha Steenwijk have toes from here to Tokyo. And Martien Meiland also appears to have some difficulty with critical reactions.

Martien is pissed

The Meilandjes heard for a while that they would be on the decline, but since the new audience measurement started after the summer, Chateau Meiland has suddenly become a ratings hit again. Very strange, but Martien attributes that to his own popularity. And he is thrilled to now be proven right.

Martien is extremely happy with the figures from this new measurement. “With deferred viewing we are even at 1.2 million. Really crazy, so much fun! And yes indeed, what a nonsense. Because you will then have several times lower viewing figures. Then it’s like: ‘Martien said that if they fall below a million, they will stop.’ Then I think: here we go again.”

Absolutely fine

All that criticism is very lame, says Martien in the Weekend. “It’s the same song every time. Well, 939,000 viewers are totally fine with me! You know, it’s just that: then it’s that celebrity’s turn in the media again, and then it’s someone else’s turn. Our guests often say to me, ‘That’s just envy.’”

It is also a bit like the SBS 6 audience or the Dutch viewer in general, he thinks. “I also notice that Belgian viewers are very different from Dutch people, who are often sour in their reactions.”
