Tennis professional Maximilian Marterer reached the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Antwerp.
In the first round, the qualifier from Nuremberg defeated seventh-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6:3, 6:4. A German duel against Dominik Koepfer could now await Marterer. He meets the Portuguese Nuno Borges at the start on Wednesday.
Thanks to an early break, Marterer took a 3-0 lead against the favored Gasquet and played all of his serve games in the first set. The 28-year-old also remained flawless in the second round, set the course for victory with a break to make it 4:3 and finally converted his first match point after 1:10 hours of play.
