A good month ago, Mart Smeets sat at the talk show table of Beau van Erven Dorens to promote his new book about cycling. Apparently that did not go well, because now the presenter announces in the Panorama that he never wants to sit on a talk show again. He’s done with it all the time.

Mart grumpy

Mart was also very difficult about that Panorama interview, the interviewer reveals. “We phoned each other prior to this interview. In that conversation you indicated that you only wanted to answer questions about the book, because you…”

Mart then says: “No, that’s not right. What I’ve said is that I don’t answer questions about my private life. That is something else. Or about topics I know nothing about. That is also such a journalistic deviation from today. At every talk show table you get a question about Putin, or about covid. I do not feel like it.”

No longer in talk shows

Mart does not want to be asked by the Beau’s and Eva’s of this world about the war in Ukraine or the corona virus. “I don’t understand covid. That’s why I don’t sit at those kinds of tables anymore.”

The Panorama interviewer: “But I can’t ask you who you think will win the Tour.”

Martin: “No. I also think that’s such nonsense, predicting. Journalism is describing what is happening, not looking into a crystal ball.”

Grumpy about podcast

Mart can currently be heard in the cycling podcast from NPO Radio 1. “I am happy to participate in that, but they also want to play such a silly game in which you have to guess who will win the stage the next day. I’m not going to guess anything. Why would I do that? What nonsense.”

“Am I saying that right, a podcast?”
