Mart Hoogkamer doubted last summer whether he should spend his money on a boat or on a holiday worth 30,000 euros. In the end he opted for the sloop. “I will enjoy that for a long time to come.”
Mart Hoogkamer’s life has changed enormously since he became a real celebrity. He no longer has to look at offers if he wants to travel and moreover, he can now drive around in a luxury car. When the big money started pouring in, the folk singer immediately took it, he says in the Beau monde.
Boat or Ibiza
What’s the first thing Mart did when the silver fleet came in? “As soon as things started going well, I treated myself to a Mercedes. If you ask me what I like, I would say: a good car and a boat. Last summer Jennifer and I didn’t go on vacation, but we bought a nice boat,” he says.
The two doubted for a while, because they could also go to Ibiza for the same money. “We could also have said: come on, let’s go to Ibiza and make thirty thousand euros there, which I think is really nonsense. Or you buy a boat that you will enjoy for years to come. Well, then I will go for the latter, you know.”
Sparingly
Mart says he is thrifty because he wants to be able to retire as quickly as possible. “I want to have it made as soon as possible for later, so I prefer to travel twice on the same ticket, so to speak. If I want to buy something crazy on an impulse, my girlfriend intervenes. She is very good to me and also wants to save as much as possible.”
They turn every penny at home. “Of course I sometimes buy expensive clothes, that is also part of my profession. Recently I bought shoes for a few hundred euros, but then I’m sick of it when they get dirty. I don’t think: I’ll buy new ones, no, I’m going to clean like crazy.”
