Mars bars ‘limited availability’ at Jumbo due to price war

Those who want to buy chocolate bars such as Mars and Snickers and animal food from Whiskas at the Jumbo may be disappointed. They are temporarily unavailable in the webshop of the supermarket giant. And they are only available in stores. This has to do with difficult price negotiations between Jumbo and Mars.

“It goes without saying that we find this annoying for our customers and we do everything we can to offer good alternatives,” a spokeswoman for Jumbo responds after reporting by RTL Z.

The store does not want to give details about the talks with Mars. The information officer does indicate that the supermarket is confronted with very strong price increases from some suppliers of A brands.

Cost increases
“We understand that certain price increases are unavoidable from underlying cost increases, but some price increases cannot be explained to us.”

Since the war in Ukraine began, inflation in Europe has risen sharply. Many manufacturers have recently increased their prices at a rapid pace. Supermarkets do the same, because otherwise their profit margins will come under pressure. But they are also hesitant, because if they pass on all the increased costs to their customers, there is a risk that they will prefer to do their shopping at other stores.

New appointments
Mars, in turn, says that supermarkets and their suppliers make new agreements every year. “Normally, these talks are completed before the previous year’s agreement comes to an end. This year, too, most supermarkets succeeded. However, if this is not the case and there are no new agreements yet, the parties can decide to cancel the orders. or suspend deliveries.”
