The last month of the year is the favorite month for Italian couples to take the plunge and get engaged. This is from the 2023 edition of Il Marriage White Book, (published by Matrimonio.com in collaboration with Professor Carles Torrecilla, Google and Esade Business School). Following, among the perfect months to imagine the wedding, are August and, jointly, January, June, July, September and October.

If the preferred month to get married is September (at least for 24% of couples), it is instead the Christmas atmosphere that is the backdrop to most of the official engagements of Italian couples.

What is so special about the last month of the year is explained by Ivana, the bride-to-be, in response to a survey launched by the Matrimonio.com Community. «December has a particular magic that can make the moment of the proposal fairy-tale». But two other elements probably also contribute to motivating the spouses. First of all, the availability of a few days of holiday to spend together: useful time to develop the right intensity and find the right moment. But to show the way there is also the idea of ​​putting the wedding at the top of the list of good resolutions for the new year.

The exchange of the ring and the watch, face to face

For a marriage proposal to be perfect, the atmosphere is essential. 80% of couples know this, those who don’t give up a pinch of tradition. How they do not give up (73%) the traditional exchange of the ring and the watch. The moment of the proposal? For 79% of couples it is that of total intimacy, one on one: be it a dinner, a kiss under the mistletoe or a moment together, without anyone who can break in and disturb. Only in 12% of cases were parents present at the time of the proposal and in 9% were friends.

As for the reasons that drive couples to get married today, there is a certain variety of objectives. For 68%, getting married means taking an important step in the love story. For 11% they want to create an opportunity to celebrate with relatives and friends. Again, for 10% it is a decision that has to do with children: previously had (8%) or waiting to have them (2%).
