Marmoush hits late: Derby between Mainz and Frankfurt ends in a draw

Yellow-red for Knauff

Eintracht Frankfurt is already under pressure at the beginning of the new season despite a point saved at the last minute. In the Rhein-Hessen-Derby on Sunday, the guests came out on hand thanks to Omar Marmoush’s goal in the first minute of injury time at FSV Mainz 05 to a 1-1 (0-1). Jae-Sung Lee (25th) scored for Mainz in front of 33,305 spectators. In the 61st minute, Frankfurt’s Ansgar Knauff had to leave the field with yellow-red.

Frankfurt is now without a win in twelve away games in the Bundesliga. Eintracht need to improve significantly in Thursday’s Conference League play-off second leg against Levski Sofia after a 1-1 draw to avoid elimination in this European competition and a false start. Frankfurt’s new coach Dino Toppmöller apologized before kick-off that since taking office there have still been problems in many areas because the team is still in the “discovery phase”.

In response to the meager 1-1 draw in the Conference League at Levski Sofia, he had ordered four new players into the starting XI. However, without great effect and greater penetrating power against much more agile and aggressive Mainzer. For the hosts, on the other hand, it paid off that coach Bo Svensson completely replaced the back three after the 4-1 loss at 1. FC Union Berlin – with new signing Sepp van den Berg in the centre.

In the first half, she literally let the Eintracht pros bounce off the few offensive attempts. This also applied to Frankfurt’s top striker Randal Kolo Muani, who could hardly step into the limelight. In the coming week it will be decided whether the Frenchman will return to his home country Paris Saint-Germain if the series champion still comes close to meeting the 100 million euro requirement of the Hessians.

Mainz, on the other hand, put a lot of pressure on, but didn’t have too many chances either. In the 23rd minute, a penalty was not awarded after video evidence: Nelson Weiper – who came on to replace the injured goalscorer Ludovic Ajorque – shot Robin Koch in the arm, but Koch turned away. Two minutes later, however, the South Korean Lee took advantage of an unfortunate collision between Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and Hrvoje Smolcic: the keeper let the ball bounce too short and Lee headed in to make it 1-0.

After the half-time break, Frankfurt became more active and created chances, but they didn’t lead to anything worth counting. In the 59th minute it was Kolo Muani, who was later substituted, whose header was just cleared by Mainz’s Anthony Caci on the goal line. Lucky for the hosts, who only had to fight against ten Frankfurters from the 61st minute. Eintracht winger Ansgar Knauff hit Leandro Barreiro in the face with his leg that was too high and saw the yellow-red card. With only ten players on the field, the Hessians managed to equalize in added time.
