The heavy-blooded ballads of his breakup album Make Way For Love (2018) were unquestionably great. However, the question arose as to whether the New Zealand singer and songwriter can do (even) more. Most recently, Marlon Williams has worked as an actor and released a record with Canadian folk duo Kacy & Clayton.
But only with “My Boy” does Williams show what he’s really made of. The album plays with male identities in the most poppy forms imaginable. “Princes Walk” has the queer grandeur of a John Grant ballad, “Don’t Go Back” is reminiscent of Jens Lekman. Williams has incorporated the sound of the New Romantics and now churns out masterpieces like “River Rival” and “Thinking Of Nina”.
