NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–Wall Street looks set for a well-contested opener on Friday. Job creation slowed more than expected in June, according to the official labor market report. The unemployment rate fell slightly, as expected, while wages rose at a similar rate to the previous month. Overall, the data somewhat alleviate the fear of interest rate hikes that had fueled the surprisingly strong labor market report by the private service provider ADP on Thursday and the minutes of the most recent US Federal Reserve meeting, which were interpreted as “false” on Wednesday.
Market interest rates, which rose sharply as a result of interest rate speculation on Thursday, are falling slightly at the short end of the yield curve and only slightly increasing at the long end. Dollar softens slightly after data. The dollar index fell 0.1 percent. The euro climbs back above the $1.09 mark. Oil prices are holding up well. They are somewhat supported by Russia and Saudi Arabia’s announced production cuts earlier in the week.
Among the individual stocks on the stock exchange, Levi Strauss collapsed by a good 8 percent before the market. The jeans manufacturer lowered its annual forecast when it presented mixed quarterly figures. The June sales data from the wholesaler Costco (-0.5%) were also not convincing in all respects.
