The organizers of the grass tournament for women are open to a men’s tennis tournament in Berlin. According to Edwin Weindorfer, this is not yet foreseeable.
“Why not a second tournament in Berlin? But it has to make sense, it has to be a good week, it has to be a cool location, we’re always open there,” said the Austrian at the end of the WTA tournament.
However, a license from the professional organization ATP would be required to host a men’s event. “A second big tennis tournament would definitely fit here after Berlin, but a lot of water still has to flow along the Spree,” said Weindorfer.
A clay court tournament for women took place in Berlin until 2008, two years ago the first edition of the grass event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a replacement, there were two invitation tournaments in the Steffi Graf Stadium and at the former Tempelhof Airport in 2020. In the hangar there, however, there would not be enough capacity for visitors, said Weindorfer.
The organizers drew a positive conclusion for the second edition of the grass tournament. “I’m sportingly satisfied from start to finish,” said tournament director Barbara Rittner. According to official information, almost 30,000 spectators came to the tournament.
