Ilyutcenko loses point
Since the market value update after the World Cup in Qatar a few days ago, there is a new MVP in South Korea: Gue-sung Cho from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Shortly before the end of 2022, the other values in the K League 1 were also updated. The really big outliers, neither upwards nor downwards, do not stand out. There are, however, notable developments.
Ex-Premier League professional Modou Barrow was finally able to record a small plus after two devaluations at Jeonbuk. “Barrow was able to decide several games single-handedly. He is the new foreign superstar in the top team Jeonbuk, where previous purchases usually did not perform as hoped and the team was not able to achieve success as hoped. It is hardly surprising that there are already offers from Europe, which is why Jeonbuk should be looking to extend his attacker’s contract, which expires next year, as soon as possible,” says Tiberius Radziejewski, Area Manager Asia at TM. From 1.2 million euros to 1.4 million euros and thus to a top 3 value, past the former Duisburg Stanislav Iljutcenko, who previously had to cede his rank as market value leader in South Korea to World Cup driver Cho and at FC Seoul itself has now been devalued by 300,000 to 1.3 million euros.
Barcelona-trained Seung-woo Lee has continued to flourish since joining Suwon FC earlier this year. Radziejewski explains: “The ex-La Masia talent, who was also a candidate for the final selection of the World Cup squad, will be rewarded for his performance and consistency and will have his highest value since 2021.” His new value of 700,000 euros (+175,000 ) is the best appraisal since his time at VV St. Truiden in Belgium, where his market value once fell by more than half from EUR 1.7 million within a year.
South Korea: Kang Most Valuable Teenager – Yang With Biggest Gain Among Youngsters
Among the young professionals who have seen the strongest developments are Sang-yun Kang (Jeonbuk), who can more than triple his value from 75,000 to 275,000 euros. Ji-soo Kim (Seongnam FC) has more than doubled, from 150,000 to 350,000 euros, and 19-year-old Seoul youngster Seong-jin Kang (featured in TM’s talent calendar two years ago) has increased by 75,000 euros to secure the rank of most valuable teenager in the South Korean league.
However, the 20-year-old rising star Hyun-jun Yang of Gangwon FC stands out the most. An upgrade of 425,000 euros is the biggest plus of the update after the upgraded Cho in the WM update. “He is South Korea’s youth player of the year and was shortlisted for the World Cup squad despite only being in his second year as a professional. He’s one of the reasons why Gangwon played the second best in the club’s history last season,” Radziejewski explains Yang’s jump.
This is how the Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
