Market values Scotland: Celtic’s O’Riley rises – Rangers’ Cifuentes falls

Premiership interim results

After an eventful summer transfer window in which €41.8m was spent on 178 signings in the Scottish Premiership, and a dramatic start to the new season in Scotland, the time seems ideal for an interim market value update. Transfermarkt.co.uk has made changes to around 20 percent of players, mainly based on transfer fees paid, notable performances and fluctuations in form in the early stages of the season. The big winner and new in the top 5 of the Premiership is Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, who cracks the 10 million mark and overtakes José Cifuentes, among others. The Rangers signed the “eighth” from LAFC relatively cheaply – his market value is falling.

O’Riley continues to develop well at Parkhead: the 22-year-old Danish talent has three goals and two assists in the first seven games and has subsequently increased his market value by €1m to €10m. Ex-Schalke player Rabbi Matondo and Jack Butland from Rangers showed strong performances in an otherwise weak team and increased their earnings by 500,000 euros to 2.5 million and 2 million euros respectively. Cifuentes, on the other hand, came from Los Angeles for just 1.4 million euros and has not been able to assert himself at Ibrox to date. The potential that he once showed in the MLS seems to have reached its limits for the time being, his market value is falling from 12 million to 8.5 million euros.

Mixed market value sentiments for Celtic and Rangers signings

Of course, the Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers dominate the league not only on the pitch – even if this doesn’t apply to the latter – but especially when it comes to the amount of transfer fees for arrivals and departures. These prices, as well as the subsequent form of these signings, have largely determined rivals’ market value changes. For example, the Celtic newcomers Maik Nawrocki (+0.5 to 4.5 million), Luis Palma (+1 to 3.5 million), Odin Thiago Holm (+0.3 to 2.8 million) and Gustaf Lagerbielke (+1.8 to 3 million) to take into account the amounts paid for them. The same applies to Rangers newcomer Sam Lammers, known from Frankfurt, whose value increases by 500,000 to 2.5 million euros.

However, transfer fees are not the only factor that influences market value. There have been major squad shake-ups at both clubs, with both Rangers’ Michael Beale and Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers looking to part ways with stars and key performers they inherited from their predecessors. This results in some players who are no longer as respected as they once were being demoted. At Celtic, for example, the market value of James McCarthy fell by 100,000 to 400,000 euros and that of Mikey Johnston by 300,000 to 1.2 million euros. At Rangers, Tom Lawrence (by €500,000 to €3.5 million) and Scott Wright (by €500,000 to €1.2 million) are also losing value.

Scotland: Motherwell steal the show with a fantastic start to the season

Perhaps the most impressive club in Scotland at the moment is neither Celtic nor Rangers, but Motherwell. After only two defeats in the first ten games across all competitions, the “Steelmen” are in third place in the table and were able to rely on a number of players. Perhaps the most obvious example is Blair Spittal (27), who has contributed two goals and two assists to date. Therefore, its market value increases from 550,000 to 750,000 euros.

This is how transfer market market values work

The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
