Minus for Volland in the update
Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, Transfermarkt.fr updated all French Ligue 1 market values and upgraded more than 100 players. While some of the league’s biggest names remain unchanged, Stade Rennes’ 17-year-old Désiré Doué stands out with a huge plus. From a German point of view, a very clear devaluation of national player Kevin Volland (30) comes into focus.
In the September update, Doué had already increased its market value by more than 3.5 million euros, and the Rennes talent from attacking midfield continued to flourish, collecting starting eleven appearances in the league as well as internationally and scoring as a joker in the championship and the Europa League against Nantes, Brest and Kyiv. “Although he has only just extended until 2025, Doué should soon become a big topic on the transfer market,” estimates Ronan Caroff, Area Manager of TM in France.
According to the expert, the almost four-fold increase in value from EUR 4 million to EUR 15 million is “only a foretaste” of what the future could hold for Doué. Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, who also came from Rennes, is already the only 17-year-old with a higher market value worldwide.
Rennes in a state of emergency – Badiashile most valuable Monaco pupil since Mbappé
The extra portion for Doué also dominates the increase in squad value at Roazhon Park: Rennes is up almost 28 million euros. Plus 5m for Arnaud Kalimuendo (20), plus 3m for Martin Terrier (25), Amine Gouiri (22) and Adrien Truffert (20), 2m for Lovro Majer (24) and Arthur Theate (22). “All of these upgrades reflect the great time Rennes have had over the past few months, unbeaten in 14 games, longest streak in club history. In addition, all of these players will also be upgraded because of the potential that still lies dormant in them,” emphasizes Caroff. “All upgrades are logical if we look at them individually. If Rennes sells any of them soon, it will be at a high price.”
Harit in top 10: Biggest winners in Ligue 1 update
In Caroff’s opinion, Monaco’s central defender Benoît Badiashile (21) was able to generate even greater hype than before about his person. Regular starting XI appearances, the first nomination for the national team and good prospects for the World Cup ticket underpin an upgrade by 10 million to 40 million euros, with which Badiashile now even trumps the former value of the flagship homegrown Kylian Mbappé (23) in the Principality and after today’s PSG star is now the second most valuable player from the youth of the Monegasque.
The increase in value of Folarin Balogun from Stade Reims is no less impressive. The 21-year-old, on loan from Arsenal, has made a remarkable contribution to the Rémois strike in what has otherwise been a difficult season for the team. There are seven goals and two assists in 13 appearances. “He’s one of those players who keeps them above the relegation zone,” said Caroff, referring to Reims’ stroke of luck, which doubled his value from €7m to €14m. “Balogun’s season so far should generate interest in the market when he returns to Arsenal after his loan.”
Only Mendes and Vitinha increase in PSG’s top 10 – World Cup as an indicator
Nuno Mendes (20) is particularly striking when looking at the master from Paris. Also because little else is moving among the big names at PSG in this update, the Portuguese left-back has jumped into the top 5 of the capital club with a market value increase from 10 million to 60 million euros. In addition to a growing radiance in the Red-Blue squad, Caroff also lists Mendes’ strong placings at the Kopa Trophy (6th) and the Golden Boy Award (5th), while the highlight of the year with the approaching World Cup is still to come could.
The fact that the values of numerous big names remain unchanged before the World Cup tournament – only Mendes and Vitinha (+5 to 45) have been adjusted in the top 10 of the most valuable players – is explained by TM specialist Caroff as follows: “They are all PSG- players and their club performances in all competitions are what we could have expected from them. Therefore, for the time being, no change seems absolutely necessary. Instead, it’s more exciting to wait for the World Cup and then adjust individual values with more foresight.”
There are already some losses at PSG. Carlos Soler (25) and Renato Sanches (25) are still unable to play a constant role in the densely occupied Parisian midfield, the same applies to Hugo Ekitiké (20) up front. Their devaluations by 5 million to 35 million euros (Soler) or 3 million to 25 million euros are three of a total of seven downgrades in the Prinzenpark. In the update, the German striker Volland alone had to cancel an even larger million value than Soler.
Volland, Ünder & Co.: Biggest losers in the Ligue 1 update
Biggest minus for Volland – Bentaleb, Harit and Embolo continue to grow
Volland has lost his regular spot in Monaco’s attack, having only come off the bench on a few occasions in the league so far. “An ankle injury early in the current season was anything but helpful,” states area manager Caroff. “In addition, he turned 30 and was not called up to the national team last year, and the World Cup will very likely not be an issue either, so interest in him will drop somewhat and with it his value.” Volland recorded a loss of 6 million euros the update – only 16 million euros.
Volland isn’t the only former Bundesliga pro to have been re-rated. Particularly noteworthy are positive developments, namely those of former Schalke player Nabil Bentaleb (27) and Amine Harit (25), who is on loan with a purchase obligation belong.
Bentaleb, listed at just €1.8m after leaving Schalke, has increased his value for the third time in a row and is now at €5m. Harit, whose purchase obligation is said to be linked to the time he has been used, improves from 10 million to 14 million euros. The former Schalke player Breel Embolo (25), who moved to Monaco from Mönchengladbach in September, recorded a further increase of EUR 3 million and is now climbing again by EUR 2 million to EUR 20 million. Embolo had disputed Volland’s starting place and has contributed seven goals and four assists in 20 competitive games.
This is how the Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
