Market values Greece: James no longer the most valuable professional – ex-Fortune Narey on the rise

Update super league

Transfermarkt has completely updated the market values of the Greek Super League, causing shifts among the most valuable players in the league. While the Olympiakos-Piraeus summer newcomers James Rodríguez and Diadié Samassékou were still a duo at the top, the Hoffenheim loan is now alone at the top of the ranking. Although both lose, Samassékou only loses one million to now 12 million euros, while James falls from 13 to 9 million euros. Its lowest since 2011.

The third most valuable in the group, Georgios Masouras, is also going downhill. With a minus of 2.5 million euros to 7.5 million euros, the left wing recorded the second largest depreciation in the league after James and ex-Monaco professional Djibril Sidibé (-4 to 4 million euros). All in all, record champions Piraeus lost the most in terms of squad value compared to all clubs, is now valued at 116.2 million euros instead of 139.05, but still remains at the top by a wide margin. AEK Athens in second place has an overall rating of 51.6 million euros (-6.9 percent).

The general explanation for the development of the squad value declines that can be seen in many clubs is that the 2022/23 league has only collected 2,125 points in the UEFA five-year ranking – a worse value was last recorded in 1990/91. The Super League has been falling short of expectations for years. Therefore, the market values are also corrected downwards.

Update Super League: Panathinaikos on the upswing – plus for ex-Düsseldorfer Narey

One of the few exceptions to this trend is leaders Panathinaikos, who before Sunday night’s game against Olympiacos (1-1) had started the season with ten wins from ten games, the best start in club history. For this, three players were rewarded with a plus of 500,000 euros: Aitor Cantalapiedra, Andraz Sporar and Sebastián Palacios.

Cantalapiedra, now at 2.5 million euros, is (still) the top scorer with eight goals, but suffered a cruciate ligament tear, otherwise the upgrade would have been even higher. Centre-forward Sporar (€5m) was signed from Sporting in the summer for €3.5m, making it the most expensive transfer in the last 13 years. This investment has paid off so far. The Slovenian has already contributed five goals and two assists in the league. Palacios (3.5 million euros) has been part of the team since 2021 and is still one of the top performers.

Khaled Narey also goes up by 500,000 euros. The winger switched from Fortuna Düsseldorf to PAOK Thessaloniki in the summer for a fee of 1.5 million euros and quickly found his feet. The 28-year-old has recorded six scorers to date, which only five players in the Super League can surpass. With a market value of 2.5 million euros, Narey has returned to the level of his 2019 peak, which he held at Hamburger SV.

Narey’s teammate Konstantinos Koulierakis made the biggest jump in the league, increasing by 1.2 to 1.5 million euros. Last season, the 18-year-old central defender played for the B team in the second division. In the summer there was said to have been an inquiry from Borussia Dortmund for the second team and other clubs were apparently already interested, whereupon sports director José Boto increased the price tag to 15 million euros. Koulierakis’ contract with PAOK runs until the end of 2025.

This is how the Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are created taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the Transfermarkt community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational framework conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
