Market values: Arsenal pass Man City in squad value – New No. 1

snapshot

The most valuable squad in the world of football is currently not Manchester City, but Arsenal. What seemed like a law of nature for years has been overridden by the Gunners’ record spending for the time being – it’s probably a snapshot. How can it be that a club that only watched the Champions League on TV for six years will have a team on July 17, 2023 that is 300 million euros ahead of FC Bayern in terms of squad value?

For 231.6 million euros, the English runners-up have been strengthened this summer with Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice, and since coach Mikel Arteta took office at the end of 2019, the squad value has increased from 668 million to 1.21 billion euros. That corresponds to an increase of 528 million euros – no other club can match that. Arsenal bought players for €685m during that period and only earned €104m on the transfer market, down €581m. No other club in the world has suffered such a large loss since January 2020, not even Chelsea (-€563m).

Success proves Arsenal right as high spending and a negative transfer record are commonplace in the top half of the Premier League, but no other top club has been able to boost their squad value to such an extent. “The high squad value of the ‘Gunners’ is also due to their average age – no key player is older than 26,” says Daniel Busch, Area Manager Transfermarkt UK. The last time when Man City did not provide the most valuable squad, Liverpool briefly had the most valuable players in May 2021 (squad value: €1.13bn). Since then, the Reds have dropped around 285 million euros.

Market values: Man City could leave Arsenal far behind this summer

It is difficult to say today which club will come out of this transfer phase with the most valuable squad, but there is a lot to be said for Man City. Should the triple winner bring Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig) and Arsenal z. If, for example, the change candidates Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Folarin Balogun sell or lend, the “Citizens” would again be around 150 million euros ahead of the “Gunners”.

Squad value or not, Arsenal are back at the top after a long dry spell and that has been underscored by the summer transfers so far. “Rice is an absolute leader who can make the difference in the title race thanks to the balance he brings to a team. Despite his 24 years, he is very experienced and a real leader. Havertz, often used as a striker at Chelsea, is called back into midfield by Arteta and can shine in a solid team alongside Martin Ødegaard in his strongest position. And Timber gives the defensive even more variability,” said England expert Busch.
