In Transfermarkt.com.ar’s market value update, Copa Libertadores semi-finalist CA Boca Juniors is the big winner. The “Xeneizs” increased their squad value by around 12 million to 79.5 million euros in the 194-player update of the Argentine Copa de la Liga Profesional de Fútbol, thereby significantly reducing the gap to arch-rival CA River Plate. Despite strong national performances, the “Millonarios” lost 6.7 million euros after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the South American Champions League and now stand at 92.8 million euros. The fact that Boca is moving closer to River is mainly due to the breakthrough of Valentín Barco, the biggest winner of the update.
“Barco is undoubtedly the most promising and valuable player in Boca Juniors – and after Nicolás de la Cruz, who is worth 11 million euros, he is also the second most valuable player in Argentine football at 10 million euros,” explains Scott Christensen, Area Manager AR & South America at Transfermarkt. “’Colo’ receives a market value increase of 6.5 million. The former left-back, who is now mostly used as an attacker, is now one of the 40 most valuable Argentine players worldwide and one of the 20 most valuable of the 2004 class. There will be no shortage of offers for Barco in the next transfer window, given his characteristics and personality – considering that he is only 19 years old – there are not enough of them on the market at the moment.”

Things are also going up significantly for Benjamín Rollheiser (23) from Estudiantes de La Plata. The right winger increases his market value by €5 million to €8 million – the second highest increase after Barco in this update. Christensen explains: “Rollheiser showed remarkable performances in both the league and the Copa Sudamericana, and there were already rumors linking him to Newcastle United.” According to this update, he is tied with Rollheiser in the market value ranking of the Argentine upper house for the 19 years old Agustín Giay (+3.5 million) as well as Brian Aguirre (20; +4 million), Pablo Solari (22; +1 million), Federico Redondo (20; +4 million) and Anibal Moreno (24). The latter was not included in the update.
Market values Argentina: River Plate the most devalued club
The age of some players in particular takes a toll on River Plate’s squad value. Pity Martínez (-2 million to 5 million), Manuel Lanzini (-1 to 5 million), Nacho Fernández (-0.8 to 2.2 million), Miguel Borja (-0.7 to 3.8 million), Franco Armani (-0.7 to 1.5 million), Matias Suarez (-0.7 to 0.3 million) and Solomon Rondon (-0.5 to 1 million) are some of the players who are being devalued at River Plate – all of whom have passed the age limit of 30 years since the last update or longer.
Christensen explains: “In addition to the age factor, it should be borne in mind that players like Lanzini, Martínez or Edinson Cavani, who plays for Boca and drops by 500,000 to 2.5 million, came to Argentina from nominally stronger leagues and are one because of their new environment should have had a lower market value. The first two named, both 30 years old, remain among the 30 most valuable players in Argentina.” Other players who have lost value include Walter Bou (-0.5 to 2 million), Luca Langoni (-1 to 5 million) or Johan Carbonero (-0.8 to 3.2 million).
