Mark van Bommel has a new job. A good six months after leaving as coach of Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg, the former Bayern professional is now taking over the coaching of a top Belgian club.
Seven months after his release from VfL Wolfsburg, former Bayern captain Mark van Bommel has a new coaching job. The Belgian first division club FC Royal Antwerpen announced the signing of the 45-year-old Dutchman on Thursday. Van Bommel signed a two-year contract with the club of former Werder striker Johannes Eggestein.
Van Bommel only switched to Wolfsburg last year as the successor to Oliver Glasner. After eight competitive games without a win, the Bundesliga team parted ways with the 2010 runner-up in October. His successor Florian Kohfeldt has also had to leave VfL.
The former European Cup finalists from Antwerp have big ambitions thanks to the financial backing of their wealthy president. The club won the Belgian Cup in 2020 and met Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League preliminary round in 2021. FC Royal finished fourth in the Belgian league last season.
