Mariska received the Reino Helismaa award 2022

Mariska was awarded the Reino Helismaa award for distinguished lyricist.

Musician Mariska has been awarded the Reino Helismaa award. Awarded by Workers’ Cultural Association tells about it on his website.

The Reino Helismaa award is given every few years to a distinguished lyricist. Mariska’s versatility and wide-ranging skills as an artist, lyricist and master of different styles are cited as the basis for the award.

– Mariska has released a total of six solo albums and two Mariska & Pahat Sudet albums, all of which have influences from rap, pop, jats and iskelm. The unifying factor in the productions, however, is Mariska’s personality and the texts, which make the Finnish language sound from relatability to humor and from folk song-like sensitivity to urban rap-flow, the justification states.

Mariska is compared in the award criteria herself Reino to Helismaaas both have written songs both for themselves and for other artists.

– Singing is my passion and calling. Through song lyrics, I have found a route to another person and also to my inner self. Poems are a game that I never get tired of, Mariska herself commented on her award.

Mariska is also happy about her honor on Instagram.

– I received the Reino Helismaa award! And yes I am happy! Thank you TSL and the jury, now I can manage to stain the paper again, he writes.

The Reino Helismaa award is worth 5,000 euros and is awarded at a time decided by TSL every few years. The award has previously been given every five years a total of seven times. The award was last awarded to Paula Vesala in 2019.

Other previous awardees are Heikki Salo, Hector, Martti Syrjä, Sauvo Puhtila, Jaakko Teppo and Vexi Strait. The prize was awarded for the first time in 1989.

Reino Helismaa (1913–1965) was a Finnish entertainer and one of the most prolific Finnish lyricists. He wrote about 5,000 lyrics in his career, 1,500 of which ended up on the album. Helismaa’s production includes, for example, evergreens Silvery Moon, Tramp and swan, Mexico’s high-speed train and Daylight and Fenugreek.
