Mario Draghi, ready to remain as prime minister of Italy, calls for new confidence pact | Abroad

“The only solution, if we still want to stick together, is to rebuild this pact from the ground up, with courage, altruism and credibility,” he said in the Senate. “This is what the Italians are asking for”.

The former president of the European Central Bank had previously indicated that he would resign if coalition partner Five Star Movement did not agree to a package of support measures. Last Thursday, the anti-establishment party announced that it would boycott the vote in the Senate, after which Draghi threw in the towel.

Draghi tendered his resignation to Italian President Sergio Mattarella, but he refused.
