Mario Basler disappointed by BVB transfers

BVB presented the third new signing of the summer on Monday: Marcel Sabitzer is moving from Bayern Munich to Dortmund. Not a bad deal, says ex-national player Mario Basler, who had hoped for more from the Borussia transfers.

First Ramy Bensebaini, then Felix Nmecha, now Marcel Sabitzer: BVB continues to work diligently on the squad for the 2023/2024 season, which starts in a few weeks.

After the dramatically playful championship, the black and yellow are dying to finally knock FC Bayern off the throne. However, Mario Basler believes that the previous commitments are not a declaration of war.

“I’m surprised that Borussia Dortmund has done so little on the transfer market. Bensebaini, Nmecha and Sabitzer are good, but they didn’t make the really big shot and probably won’t do it either,” said the 54-year-old skeptically in his podcast “Basler ballert”.

Basler sure: BVB “no competitor for FC Bayern”

Basler would have simply expected bigger names on the Dortmund side – especially after the departure of Jude Bellingham, who went to Real Madrid for more than 100 million euros.

“That’s why they won’t play a big role this time and won’t be a competitor for FC Bayern,” predicted the 1996 European champion.

But even Basler does not find everything bad that BVB has done so far. “Marcel Sabitzer has already shown in Leipzig that he can be a really good player. He was also captain there,” he emphasized.

In Munich, however, the Austrian never really got off the ground, in the last back series Sabitzer was already temporarily parked in England at Manchester United.

Now Borussia has released almost 20 million euros to free the attacking midfielder from his predicament. It is unclear whether further transfers could follow in the near future.
