After a pleasant evening with lots of beer and tequila in the pub, the two smoke a cigarette on the terrace in the summer of 2022. There Mario asks for another beer from Ricardo. He thinks it’s enough, because he has already paid the bill inside. Then things get out of hand: Mario hits Ricardo on the head with a beer bottle, and he reacts as if bitten by a viper.
First he gives him a few blows, but when Mario is on the ground, Ricardo continues. He kicks him in the head, which witnesses describe as ‘penalty kicks, so hard’. Mario is taken to hospital, where he dies a week later, before his daughters can come over from Portugal to say goodbye.
Reporter Adrianne de Koning van AD Rotterdams Dagblad follows the case: “It is very sad that two men go to the pub for fun, and a year later one is dead and the other is in jail. That last beer, which Mario wanted so badly, killed him.”
