The first summer show of the day started at 12 o’clock. The first to step onto the stage was a journalist familiar with Marimekko’s news Maria Veitola and the CEO of Marimekko Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko. Parivaljakko welcomed everyone to be a part of Marimekko’s show buzz in the heart of Helsinki.

Soon the band Malla, known for their hazy club sound, filled the stage with charming sounds. It didn’t take long for the models to step onto the stage presenting Marimekko’s new collection.
– Our summer 2023 collection strongly expresses what Marimekko is all about, i.e. joy of life and optimism. The collection is built on archetypal silhouettes and they are decorated with bold main colors and almost watercolor-like tones and patterns, Alahuhta-Kasko began.

The collection is from Marimekko’s creative director, Rebecca Bay, as well as the handwriting of the internal design team. Alahuhta-Kasko says that the team has collaborated with several print designers, including a painting artist by Landon Metz with.
In addition to this, you can see archive treasures in the collection, among other things From Maija Isola, From Fujiwo Ishimoto mixed From Annika Rimala.
– Our collections always have this kind of coexistence of brand new pattern designs and these pattern treasures from archives and different decades. Now in the summer collection, these futuristic floral patterns play an important role, says Alahuhta-Kasko.

What was special this year was that some of the models in the fashion show were found through an open search among members of the Marimekko community. Thus, the diversity and positive energy of the Marimekko community can be seen even more strongly than before.
– The fashion world is traditionally quite superficial, exclusive and fast-cycling, Marimekko has always been a counter force to this. We have always wanted to be inviting and empowering people. We want to encourage people to express themselves with colors and patterns. Therefore, it was a natural idea for us to bring members of the Marimekko community to the catwalk.
