Marie Wesselink, who could call herself the oldest resident of Overijssel at 107 years old, has passed away. The born and raised Albergse passed away last Friday, after years of living in nursing home de Meulenhof in Tubbergen. As of mid-2022, she was the oldest resident of this province. In December, Marie celebrated her 107th birthday.
Marie Wesselink saw the light of day on December 1, 1915 in a family that eventually had eight children. She was born and raised in Albergen and then lived with her brother and his family for many years. She was like a second mother to the children. Marie herself never married.
Most surprised myself
Last year, when Marie was 106 years and 5 months old, she became the oldest inhabitant of Overijssel. This milestone was celebrated extensively with a visit from the then mayor Wilmien Haverkamp. Marie herself was especially surprised, because her long life had not always been free from illness. “I had not expected this either.” During the celebration of her 107th birthday in December last year, she repeated that gratitude: “I only started living from the age of 60. I had severe asthma and was always short of breath. And I also had cancer.”
The mayor also paid a visit during her last birthday. During the farewell to mayor mother Jon Hermans, Marie even looked ahead to her next birthday. “And now on to the 108?”‚ asked the mayor just to be sure. ‘Yes’, Marie replied firmly. „Then mö’j almoal wierkom’n. See you next year!”
Condolence and funeral
On Friday, February 3, Marie Wesselink passed away at the age of 107. Those who want to say goodbye to Marie can do so on Tuesday between 7 and 7.30 pm in the chapel of the Eeshof at Sportlaan 11 in Tubbergen. Marie Wesselink’s funeral will take place in a private circle.
