In the very tough final weekend of the Tour de France Femmes, Marianne Vos from Babyloniënbroek had to hand over the yellow jersey to Annemiek van Vleuten. Van Vleuten drove away from compatriot Demi Vollering at more than sixty kilometers from the finish line on the penultimate climb and soloed to the stage win and the yellow card. Femke Gerritse from Rosmalen also lost her jersey. She had to give the polka dot jersey to Vollering.
Vos is content with losing the yellow jersey in the Tour de France Femmes. “It was very special to be able to ride in yellow for five days, but I’m actually also happy that I can ride in green for one more day,” said the 35-year-old rider from Babyloniënbroek. Winning that jersey for the points classification can hardly escape Vos after stepping down from number 2, Lorena Wiebes.
No contender
Vos conceded more than 20 minutes to winner Van Vleuten in the first mountain stage through the Vosges on Saturday. According to Vos, this once again made it clear why she was not a contender for the final victory.
“I wasn’t feeling great today. We drove full throttle to the foot of the first climb and from there it was full throttle up. I tried to find my own pace and luckily I had teammates around me who guided me to the finish. ” Vos had to drop out of her competitors in the standings on the first climb.
She won the second stage and then also took the yellow leader’s jersey, in which she booked her second stage victory in this Tour de France Femmes on Friday.
Mountains classification
Femke Gerritse from Rosmalen also had to acknowledge her superior. The polka dot jersey hangs around Vollering’s shoulders after this mountain stage. Gerritse started on Saturday for the fourth day in a row as the number one in the mountains classification.
