Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas’ is not plagiarism after all: lawsuit is no longer going ahead | Music

MusicMariah Carey (52) can breathe a sigh of relief again. The singer is no longer being charged with plagiarism. Country singer Andy Stone claimed that he had already written a song with the exact same title five years before the release of ‘All I Want For Christmas’. It has since been announced that the man has withdrawn his lawsuit.

Andy Stone sued Mariah Carey in June of this year. The country singer, who is a member of the band Vince Vance and the Valiants, in turn demanded compensation of $ 20 million (about 20.4 million euros). According to Stone, Carey had abused his style and popularity, among other things.

No permission

Despite the fact that the two songs have the same title, the songs sound completely different. Still, the country singer claims that Mariah Carey had not asked for his permission when she announced the title of her song. As a result, according to Stone, the 52-year-old singer “made a profit”.

Meanwhile, however, it appears that Stone has dropped his lawsuit against Carey. Presumably, the singer has realized that he did not have much chance of winning. It is not uncommon for songs to have the same name every now and then. For example, according to the United States Copyright Office, there are as many as 177 songs titled “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Although Mariah Carey’s version is undoubtedly the best known. The singer is said to have already earned more than 60 million dollars (61.3 million euros) from her world hit.
