María Teresa Campos, the first queen of mornings, dies

Spanish television mornings have traditionally been female territory. Ana Rosa Quintana, Susanna Griso, Mariló Montero, María Casado, Mònica López… But there has been a pioneer of the television queens of the morning magazines in Spain that has been Maria Teresa Campos. The presenter from Malaga has passed away at 82 years after the alarms for his state of health had already gone off several times in recent months, since he had suffered significant cognitive deterioration as a result of a disease of neurological origin incurable.

Although she was widely known for her television career, where in the beginning she was ‘hermida girl’, María Teresa Campos began her career in Radio. It was discovered by the director of Malaga Youth Radio when, shortly after graduating Philosophy and Letters, he entered a contest for the station, where his brother was already working. There she showed that she was made for an announcer. They were very intense years on the airwaves, where she met the man who would become her husband and mother of her two daughters, the journalist Jose Maria Borrego Doblas.

In 1968 he signed for Radio Popular COPE in Malaga, where she was in charge of the musical program ‘Español Pop’, and broke the mold speaking of feminism in spaces such as ‘Mujeres 72’, on Radio Juventud. In 1980 she was named Director of News of Andalusia of RCE (Spanish Radio Chain), work that earned him an Ondas Award, and he would later hold the position in Madrid.

Divorce and ‘hermida girl’

His landing in the capital was accompanied by a bad personal moment, for their divorce, but it brought him many professional joys. Because it was her gateway to television, the medium with which she achieved enormous success.

She made her debut as a collaborator in the TVE program ‘Tonight’presented by Carmen Maura, but she soon earned the position of presenter in spaces such as ‘Direct study’, ‘The afternoon’ and ‘Session diary’, that he combined with the waves of RNE.

But his big breakthrough comes when he becomes ‘hermid girl’ in it ‘In the morning’, from TVE. In the morning magazine jesus hermida stands out, above all, in his dialectical duels with Patricia Ballestero. Later, in 1990, he would replace his television teacher in the after-dinner program ‘My way’later renamed ‘This is your house’ and ‘Pasa la vida’.

From Telecinco to Antena 3

TVE decided to transfer it to the morning slot, then forging the nickname that would accompany her from then on as queen of the mornings. But in 1996 she couldn’t refuse a tempting offer from Telecinco, who wanted to emulate the formula that had worked so well for La 1 with Campos, now under the title of ‘Day to day’.

And he succeeded in spades. The program, which was on the air until 2004, was a complete audience success and managed to combine the most eclectic sections: a social chronicle and a review of the news from Telecinco’s ‘reality shows’ in a huddle with celebrities, journalists and people from the street; events; Musical performances; small theaters in a neighborhood patio with his great friend and ‘television husband’ Paco Valladares; a debate table with renowned journalists… The former ‘Hermina girl’ launched the ‘Campos boys and girls’ in her programs: Rocío Carrasco, her daughter Terelu, Jorge Fernández, Alejandra Prat…

His signing for antenna 3 in 2004 it was the most popular. Not only because of the million-dollar contract, but because the first great duel of the queens of the mornings took place: Ana Rosa Quintana on Telecinco with ‘El programa de Ana Rosa’ and María Teresa Campos on Antena 3 with ‘Every day’. The audience battle ended in favor of the former, which to this day still maintains its magazine on the Mediaset network.

own reality show

In recent years, his most outstanding television work has been on Telecinco, with ‘The critical gaze’, ‘What a happy time!’as defender of the spectator of ‘Save me’ and with the funny ‘reality’ ‘The Fields’where he showed his day-to-day life in his mansion and the intricacies of his relationship with his daughters, Terelu Campos and Carmen Borregoand his then partner, mustache rice.
