María Eugenia Vidal, among the “million of Susana” to the complaint for enrichment

The deputy for Together for Change and former governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Maria Eugenia Vidal published this week a tweet with a video of a program of Susana Gimenez of the year 2010, to show the devaluation of the peso against the dollar during that period and to date.

With Susana’s million in 2010 you could buy a house for USD 250,000. With the million that is raffled on TV today…”, said the tweet, and showed what things can be paid today with that same amount: “14 stocks are 14 brakes on the economy of Argentines, on the progress and development of our industry. In 2023 we are going to assume a plan to face the consequences of this disaster,” Vidal’s tweet thread continued.

But while Vidal blamed the current government for the devaluation, the lack of access to foreign currency and the difficulties in accessing their own home, she was denounced the same day for allegedly illicit enrichment and money launderingdue to inconsistencies in his affidavit of assets for the purchase of an apartment in Recoleta in 2019, when she was still governor.

The apartment in question is a property located in the “The island”one of the most charming and expensive neighborhoods in the City of Buenos Aires, and the focus of the complaint is based on alleged irregularities in its purchase, for a value of $340,000.

According to the complaint, Vidal made the deed in mid-2019, when she was still governor, and a few days after submitting the affidavit corresponding to that year, in which she reported a $95,000 estatedecided to purchase the apartment.

“The assets declared up to that moment were not enough to make this purchase, but he still bought it, without having justified until now the origin of the difference in cash that he should have obtained for its acquisition,” details the complaint carried out by the lawyer. Yamil Castro Bianchi.

At the end of her term as governor, on December 9, 2019, Vidal’s affidavit registered the apartment with a value of 1,178,666 pesos. But in his affidavit before the Anti-Corruption Officeupon assuming as a national deputy that same year, declared the same property at a value of 19,730,880 pesos.

According to Bianchi, Vidal tried to justify the purchase “partly with capital income that they were not reported in their affidavit and in part with an alleged ten-year mortgage, the existence of which is plain and simply implausible”.

The complaint also states that, according to Vidal, the apartment was acquired through a loan for 200,000 dollars granted by Mrs. Brenda Biondi, and the rest, the remaining 140,000 in cash, which added together would complete the 340,000 dollars of the total value.

But for Bianchi, it is impossible for Vidal to pay $140,000 in cash, “when he had declared $95,000 as net worth.” In addition, he warns that Brenda Biondi, who had lent the money to Vidal, was actually the seller of the property in question.
