MusicIt’s been a long time since Zomerhit was this exciting. Niels Destadsbader won three years in a row in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2020 it was written in the stars that ‘Come closer’ by Regi ft. Jaap Reseda and Olivia Trappeniers would win, last year it was established in advance that no one could compete with the monster alliance of Niels Destadsbader and Regi again with ”The world turns for you’. But this year it was finally really unpredictable.
Popular Metejoor and the equally popular Pommelien were the top favourites, but of course there were also the inevitable Niels Destadsbader – meanwhile also in the capacity of co-presenter of Siska Schoeters after his much-discussed switch from VTM to VRT and Regi, of course, and even Margriet suddenly turned out to be not completely without a chance with her earwig ‘Nice stay’.
So it is the last one that will run with the Zomerhit. “What’s happening?”, says a very happy Margriet immediately after her victory. “I’m so happy! 35 years ago I won in the ‘Flemish’ category. At that time it was still a bit derogatory. Now eight of the ten finalists performed Dutch-language music. . she winks.
This makes Margriet’s revival complete, 35 years after her first Zomerhit. In 1987 she already won the Zomerhit for best Dutch song for ‘Een vriend’. Striking: ‘Keep hanging around’ is a cover of ‘She’s After My Piano’ by 2Fabiola. Margriet took care of the song for the VTM program ‘Love for music’. 2Fabiola already won a Summer hit in 2014 with the original.
Summer hit was bigger than ever, by the way, due to a thorough collaboration between Radio 2 and One this year. With six extra Zomerhitshows on Saturday evening in the run-up to the final, the competition received more visibility than ever. To underline this new impetus, the Award was also given a new look. An Award that is now shining in the living room of Margriet Hermans.
