Maren Kroymann complains about “beauty Darwinism” in the acting industry

Grimme Prize winner Maren Kroymann has criticized what she sees as the boring image of women in the acting industry.

“When we’re younger, we’re the women who are fuckable and arouse men’s erotic interest. Then we are mothers. In the climacteric period there is a gap where there are few roles. After that comes the grandma, gray-haired or not, these are often reduced roles that don’t have much of a life of their own,” said the 74-year-old to the editorial network Germany (RND/Wednesday).

This “beauty Darwinism,” as Kroymann calls it, bothers her immensely and is very widespread. Just look at the red carpet pictures. “We outdo each other when it comes to being thin, being beautiful, being naked. That doesn’t reflect what happens in our heads, with our maturity, in our development, that we are creative and strong, can give impulses and change everything possible. That’s not yet adequately reflected in films.”

About her own age, she said that she was happy – even with wrinkles. “If women understand that it can be a great time despite all the physical disadvantages, perhaps the compulsive need to get straightened will eventually disappear.”

Kroymann has starred in many successful films and series. She became known to a large audience at the end of the 1980s as the pastor’s wife in “Oh God, Herr Pfarrer” (ARD). She later got her own satirical show, “Nacht Nurse Kroymann” (ARD). She won several awards with her sketch comedy show “Kroymann” (ARD).
