Emmanuel Macron has been re-elected president of France with 58.55 percent of the vote, according to the preliminary official final results. His right-wing challenger Marine Le Pen was good for 41.45 percent in the second round of the presidential election, the French interior ministry reports after counting all votes cast. The turnout was around 72 percent.
Macron has had to lose a lot of support from the French population compared to the presidential elections in 2017. Five years ago, he received 66.1 percent of the vote.
Two weeks ago, the first round of voting was between the liberal pro-European Macron, the left-wing Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Le Pen and the even more right-wing Eric Zemmour. Macron then won the most votes.
