Marco Kroon himself opts for 40 days in prison instead of community service

The discredited soldier Marco Kroon chooses to go to prison for 40 days instead of performing eighty hours of community service. He received that sentence after he headbutt a cop after a night out in 2019. Kroon makes this choice himself after consultation with his lawyer, the judiciary, the probation service and the Ministry of Defense.

Kroon’s lawyer, Geert-Jan Knoops, confirms the story and explains Kroon’s consideration. “Marco believes that now that he has been found guilty up to the highest court for assaulting a cop, a prison sentence is more appropriate than community service.”

According to the lawyer, this choice should not be seen as an admission of guilt. “He continues to maintain that he did not mistreat the officer. But because of the conviction, Marco has decided to make this choice.”

Movement with the head
On the evening in question in 2019 in Den Bosch, Kroon was handcuffed after he was caught urinating in public. According to him, the shackles were getting tighter, causing him to move his head back out of a reflex. However, the judges ruled that Kroon deliberately headbutted the officer standing there.

Initially, a community service of 100 hours was imposed because the commando would also have shown his genitals to an officer. The soldier was acquitted of the latter on appeal and the community service was reduced to eighty hours. The final verdict of the judges, who, according to Kroon, therefore view the situation differently than he does, have made him decide to go to prison.

At the end of September, Kroon will report to the military prison in Stroe. “In consultation with his employer, he has taken days off to serve his time in prison.”
