Marco Kroon has finished his forty days in prison and is a free man again. On LinkedIn, Kroon describes what the ‘deprivation of liberty’ has done to him. “For the past forty days I have experienced what it is like to be restricted in your freedom. Not being allowed to go where you want. Separated from your loved ones and children. Not being able to be with a deceased buddy or care for you at the last goodbye sick parents. That hurt.”
It was a matter of principle for the discredited war hero Marco Kroon. He was given eighty hours of community service for headbutting an officer in 2019, something Kroon himself kept denying. The soldier stood his ground and opted for forty days in prison in the military prison in Stroe. As of today, he is a free man again.
According to Kroon, he learned a lot in prison. “Not about life or about myself but about the importance of real freedom,” he writes.
The forty days in the military prison in Stroe without real freedom made Kroon think. “True freedom is valuable for the dignity of a person. After forty days I close a special chapter in my life. Whether I was actually guilty is irrelevant. The judge decided. I have chosen to pay my debt to our state in my own way to redeem.”
Kroon says that he has gained a special experience and that he is looking to the future with his head held high. “I am once again fully in the service of people who need it and who cannot stand up for themselves. I will maintain,” concludes Kroon.
