The German handball players really want to go to the Olympic Games. Fourth place at the European Championships was not enough for that. The DHB selection can still get their ticket to Paris via an elimination tournament that takes place in Hanover.
The tournament will take place in the Lower Saxony state capital from March 14th to 17th. The German Handball Association announced this on Friday. Captain Johannes Golla and Co.’s opponents are Croatia, Austria and Algeria. This means that Bunxde’s coach Alfred Gislason’s team can rely on home advantage in the fight for a ticket to the Olympic Games (July 26th to August 11th), as they did at the European Championships.
“If we get the chance to organize a qualification in our own country, we will do it, even if it is a challenge so soon after the European Championships,” said DHB CEO Mark Schober and added: “We hope for similar support our team, as we experienced at the European Championships in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Cologne.”
Second place is enough for participation in the Olympics
The DHB team, which came fourth at the home European Championships and narrowly missed direct qualification for Paris, must take at least second place in the tournament. Germany will first face Algeria on March 14th, then Croatia (March 15th or 16th) and Austria (March 17th). A precise date will be announced soon.
Hosts and European champions France, world champions Denmark and continental representatives Argentina, Japan, Egypt and Sweden have already qualified for the Olympic Games.
