Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey is up for auction

The jersey worn by Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico in Mexico will be auctioned in London.

According to the auction house Sotheby’s, it could bring up to six million British pounds (equivalent to around 7.2 million euros). The online auction is scheduled to begin on April 20th. Bids can be submitted until May 4th.

Maradona had scored both goals, including his infamous fist, in the legendary game that Argentina won 2-1. The goal was scored “a bit with Maradona’s head and a bit with the hand of God,” he said at the time.

In the game he scored another regular goal after playing around several Englishmen. The goal is considered the “World Cup goal of the century”. Argentina later became world champions.

Maradona, who died of a heart attack at the age of 60 in November 2020, swapped shirts with England midfielder Steve Hodge after the England game. Hodge had long lent the blue shirt with the number 10 to the National Football Museum in Manchester. Now he has decided to sell it.
