The number of burglaries will increase sharply this carnival weekend. Interpolis warns about this, because according to the insurer in Tilburg many people have left the house.
The risk of burglary is predicted with a so-called Burglary Barometer. The police also say that they expect more burglaries in the coming days than in a ‘normal’ weekend.
‘Less attentive’
In 2020, when Shrove Tuesday was celebrated on a massive scale, the number of burglaries during the carnival weekend in the major carnival cities was 57 percent higher than the weekend before. This is not only because people are away from home, says Mireille van den Boom, who is responsible for the Burglary Barometer. Also, according to her, people who have a drink pay less attention to strange behavior in the neighborhood.
Due to the relaxation of the corona measures, more burglaries are already taking place, Interpolis sees. For example, 65 percent more burglaries have been committed since the beginning of February than in the same period in 2021, when the Netherlands was in lockdown. During the lockdowns, there were fewer burglaries because people stayed at home a lot.
